Case: Bibliotheek Floriande, Hoofddorp

Bibliotheek Floriande, which was established in 2005, shares a roof with an upper secondary school with 1,500 students and extensive sports and association facilities. The building is an important identity-creating cultural player in the new, large suburb as a symbol of the local sense of community.

The library as the city's centre

The library is intended to be an iconic glass snail's shell, which is visible around the clock. Most notably during evenings when it illuminates the neighbourhood from its position at the city district's central square. Transparency and clarity are important intentions in the building. The library's bookcases have been constructed and set up in a way that makes it possible to look across the district from any part of the library. The interior design is by Aequo who use light as their most important effect. At the library in Floriande, they have worked with coloured light, which changes, and with strong colours and a consistent new design in order to ensure a communication and experience-orientated design that is completed by the service-minded, uniformed staff.

A multitude of activities – the library in the local context

With its pleasant interior design, the library first and foremost invites interested citizens to enter a wide-ranging, well-stocked library. However, it also merges with the upper secondary school's library, offering many activities targeted at the young people, including youth counselling. The library's stage is used for both children's and adults' events, and the connection to the local associations and sports life makes the library a central and life-giving meeting place in the district.

The local context

Bibliotheek Floriande is located in the city district Haarlemmermeer close to Schiphol Airport. During the period 1995-2005, a total of 17,400 homes were built in the area, which therefore more or less took on the character of a dormitory town. The library opened in 2005 as one of the first buildings in the city district with the clear objective of making the district more attractive. In 2011, the municipality opened a new main library located in a shopping centre. This library also features interior design by Aequo.
